Reflection of Leadership Understanding
Thought process Before PL:
|
Through this program I now realize that a leader is one who is able to influence and inspire others to be their best. A leader is also someone who knows their own self worth. A leader abides by their morals/values first to further be able to appeal to others. A leader takes the time to consider and understand their followers viewpoints as well to create an environment where everyone feels included. A leader may lead but true leaders impact others to give them the strength and confidence to do so as well. |

Leadership Theories:
Authentic leadership is the main theory that resonated with me the most. This because we live in a society where judgment pervades and pressures individuals to act out character in order to feel accepted. In every situation I try to stay true to myself and I understand that not everyone will like you for you but that is something I have to live with. One leader that I aspire to be like is Jesse Owens because of his bravery to follow his dreams of being a track athlete during the 20th century where African Americans were dehumanized, inferior and faced widespread disenfranchisement of voting. Another theory that resonated with me is servant leadership. A servant leader understand that it is not about them but sees leadership as an opportunity to serve others. I aspire to instill knowledge into minorities so that they will be prepared in areas that I wish I had been prepared for such as when I was a Freshman in college. Now I am a mentor for a minority program on campus for Black and LatinX men. |

Formal Leadership Role
Since the beginning of Sophomore year I have been a part of the Executive Board for the Smith Business Academy as the Director of Logistics. The Smith Business Academy, formally known as SBA is a academy for Black and LatinX men that is dedicated to academic, social, and professional achievement. I have utilized my green thinking hat that I learned more about in Public leadership to provide growth through creative possibilities for the academy. Since, I was a Freshman and just a member when I first joined SBA I was able to observe and learn about what would take the program to the next level. This includes more social events such as a Virtual Escape Room as well as staying in contact with the Freshman so they know that we are here to help if need be.
