My name is DuVal Harrell. I am currently a Sophomore at the University of Maryland R. H. Smith School of Business. Before deciding to attend the University of Maryland, I went to predominantly Black schools from Kindergarten up to High school. I attended these schools within the Bowie, MD area but I believed I needed a change of scenery in order for me to grow. Matriculating to a Predominantly White Institution (PWI) would enable me to deviate from my comfort zone and help prepare me to be around my White counterparts once I transition to the corporate world since I am a Finance major. Additionally, the Public Leadership Scholars program has been beneficial in this regard. More specifically, the debates and group assignments that I had to participate in allowed me to improve my public speaking skills and gain competencies in different aspects surrounding leadership skills. With the experiences I have went through for these three semesters with Public Leadership I can say that the knowledge I have gained will translate into my business field as I continue to pursue Executive board positions in the school of business. Not only do I have more confidence, but I also have learned how to communicate with scholars of different backgrounds and different perspectives which I now take into consideration when networking and meeting new people. Overall, I want to mentor Black and LatinX minority men while in college and create life-long friendships.
